Horseback Riding In Ruidoso- Trippin’ Momma

Horseback Riding In Ruidoso

You are looking for where you can go horseback riding in Ruidoso, right? I’ve got just the place for you. I too was searching for a place to ride horses during our trip to Ruidoso. I wanted a place where not only my big girls could ride horses but I could too with my toddler.

A quick internet search lead me to Grindstone Stables. It had great reviews and the price was in my budget.

How Much Does It Cost?

Grindstone’s one hour guided trail ride will cost you $40 per horse or $35 per horse if you pay cash.

It is totally worth it!

A credit card is required to secure reservations

Cash or credit card accepted for payment at time of ride.

Tipping the guide is always appreciated. I did not know this when I went so we failed to do this.

Quick Description of Their Trail Ride

They offer a one hour guided horseback ride. Their beautiful trail meanders past Grindstone Lake then gradually winds to the top of Townsend Ridge. At approximately 3 miles in length, their trail offers many opportunities for photographs and wildlife viewing. Grindstone guides are friendly and knowledgeable. They are always willing to lend a hand, whether it be with taking pictures of your family or answering questions.

Their trail is beginner friendly!

Children 5 and older ride on their own horse.

*No double riding allowed. (Although I was able to rie with my toddler.)

We are happy to do “lead around pony rides” in the corral for children  4 and under.

* Weight limit 250lbs

Here Is Our Personal Experience With Grindstone

I did the scariest thing ever! I rode a horse for the first time with my toddler up a freaking mountain, y’all! Grindstone Stables in Ruidoso, New Mexico is absolutely amazing!

Yes, I am flippin’ serious. The initial plan was for the big girls to get to ride a horse on an hour long trail ride. We arrived at the stables in Ruidoso, and I casually asked the dude in charge if the toddler could ride. To my surprise, he said yes. My jaw dropped.

Was he serious?

Is this legal?

Am I even considering this?

Before I knew it, the toddler and I were on a horse waiting for our trail ride to begin. The smell was unbelievably foul. I hate poop and it was every freaking where.

Almost immediately, I regretted my decision. This horse was huge and instead of it being a flat trail ride we were inching up the side of a mountain in the mud. You see. It had rained the night before so it was slippery as hell, and I can’t even begin to count how many times my horse, Pegasus, slipped. The girls were both in front of me. My heart stayed racing the entire time. Surely this was not going to end well.

The toddler started off crying and whining but then she got super relaxed and actually started petting the horse, holding the reins, and waving to everybody. I couldn’t believe it.

It was terrifying going up the mountain but it was even more terrifying going down. I had one arm around the toddler, one hand holding the reigns, and I had to keep leaning back as we were going down. I was praying for it to be over soon because I kept envisioning Pegasus falling off the side of the mountain. We didn’t have helmets or any safety gear on, and the horse handlers were mainly teenagers although I must say they were pretty awesome.

The girls looked like pros in front of me, and I couldn’t help being proud of how natural they looked.

The moment I got back I was finally able to breathe again. It was hands down one of the most amazing experiences of my life! If you are ever in Ruidoso, I can’t recommend Grindstone Stables enough!
